Essential Configuration Steps

Mind Dump is a highly capable platform with a wide array of flexible settings that allow you to tailor the workspace exactly to your workflow. While complete, in-depth guidance for every single toggle and preference is provided elsewhere in this documentation, this section focuses strictly on the essential configuration steps a new user needs to get up and running smoothly.

To access the settings page, scroll to the bottom of the sidebar from the main screen and click the ⚙ Settings link. The Settings interface will open, presenting a dedicated sidebar of its own for navigation. By default, this interface opens directly to the Global Settings page.

Global Settings

Global Settings are the foundational preferences that affect your experience of Mind Dump across your entire account, regardless of which specific Session you currently have selected. We will look at all the available settings later, but for the moment, we will consider the following essential configurations:

1. Timezone Settings

Because Mind Dump relies heavily on date-related features, setting your correct local timezone is a critical first step.

In the background, Mind Dump relates all dates and times to a standard, centralised computer time (UTC). This ensures the underlying system is reliably anchored to a single timeline. This works perfectly if you happen to live in that exact timezone; however, if you are located elsewhere in the world, your local midnight will be different—either ahead of or behind the server.

Therefore, we need to ensure your timezone aligns correctly so things in Mind Dump happen at the right time. If your timezone is incorrect, relative date commands—like assigning a task to "today" or "tomorrow"—will be interpreted incorrectly.

How to set it:

  1. Locate the Timezone Settings section at the top of the Global Settings page. (Note: Mind Dump may attempt to auto-detect your current timezone and select it for you automatically).

  2. If it is incorrect, select your correct region from the dropdown list.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the settings screen and click the Save Settings button to apply your changes.

Here is the detailed explanation for setting the Default Session, polished for your documentation and expanded using the actual interface details from the platform:

2. Default Session

If you are just starting out on your Mind Dump journey, you will probably only have one session. However, as your system grows, you might easily find yourself managing 20 different sessions for various projects, clients, or knowledge bases.

This feature allows you to choose which workspace is most important to you, preventing Mind Dump from opening every time a session is rarely used. By setting your primary session here, Mind Dump will bypass your last-viewed database and always open with your most important session loaded the moment you log in.

The Sidebar Shortcut: In addition to controlling your startup experience, configuring this setting unlocks a convenient navigation shortcut. In the main Standard View sidebar, you will find a '🚀 Default Session' button. No matter how deep you are into other databases or nested folders, clicking this button instantly switches you back to your chosen default session without having to hunt through the main session dropdown.

How to set it:

  1. Locate the Default Session section on the Global Settings page.

  2. Expand the dropdown menu and select the session you most frequently use from the list. (Note: If you prefer the system to simply remember your last-used session instead, you can leave this set to "-- None (Always ask me) --").

Scroll to the bottom and click the Save Settings button to apply your choice.

3. Currency Settings

Further down the Global Settings page, you will find the Currency setting. Here, you can enter your local currency symbol (such as $, £, €, or ¥).

This ensures that any "Currency" custom fields you add to your databases are correctly labelled with your preferred local currency across the entire application. If left unset, the system will automatically default to the dollar sign ($).

How to set it:

  1. Locate the Currency Settings section on the Global Settings page.

  2. Enter your preferred symbol into the text box.

  3. Scroll to the bottom and click the Save Settings button to apply your changes.

User Information

Setting Your Full Name

The next settings group is for User Information; this is the core information about your identity within Mind Dump.

You should enter your actual name into the Full Name field. Configuring this is highly recommended because it ensures that your actions are correctly flagged in the system. As you utilize more advanced features, such as generating shared links or participating in collaborations, this name is what will be displayed to attribute your work to you.

How to set it:

  1. Navigate to the User Information section in the Settings menu.

  2. Locate the User Details panel.

  3. Enter your name into the Full Name text box.

  4. Scroll to the bottom and click the Save Settings button to apply your changes.

Email to Mind Dump: Quick Capture

The next settings section is Email to Mind Dump. This area contains features that allow you to fully connect your personal email account to Mind Dump. Because full email integration is an involved process with several security considerations, turning it on is something you need to consider carefully. We will leave that advanced setup for later.

However, there is one highly useful and simple setting you should utilize right now. Click on the Email to Mind Dump link in the settings sidebar to access the Email to Scratch feature.

1. The Email to Scratch Pad Feature This feature works by giving you a unique, secure email address that the system will automatically recognize as being from you.

  • How it works: All you have to do is send (or forward) an email to that specific address. The contents of the email will be captured into the system, with the subject line becoming the scratch item text and the email body becoming the initial note.

  • Recovery: These captured emails will be recovered into your Scratch system when you click the "Check for New Emails" button on the scratch processing page.

We will look into the exact processing workflow later. For the moment, simply copy the unique email address displayed on this settings page and keep it in your phone or email client's contacts list (for example, save it as "Mind Dump Add") so it is ready to use later on.

As an advanced personal database system, Mind Dump is highly configurable and built to adapt to your unique workflow. While there are many additional settings available—such as auto-tagging rules, custom color themes, and advanced integrations—that we will explore in depth later, the steps covered here form your essential foundation. Completing these core configurations ensures your workspace is properly set up, allowing you to move forward confidently with the rest of your training.
